What is Shockwave Therapy?
Radial Shockwave Therapy (RSWT) is a procedure applied to a patient’s injury pby passing shock waves through their skin. We do this using our (Swiss Dolorclast® Shockwave Unit). The shockwaves created using this machine arent electric but mechanical. These waves are audible, low energy sound waves that increase blood flow to the injured site. This starts an inflammation-like response in the injured tissue, which helps the body accelerate the healing process by increasing cell generation and dissolving calcium deposits.
Why should I have Shockwave Therapy?
RSWT is offered to patients with any form of tendon pain such as; Achilles tendinopathy, patella tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis and tennis elbow. If conservative treatment such as physiotherapy, rest, injections, ice therapy and painkillers doesn’t work for a patient efficiently then shockwave therapy can a more viable approach.RSWT is a slightly invasive treatment that is carried out at our Newport clinic.
You will usualy require a course of 3-6 treatments which can be from 7-10 days apart. This would be used alongside carrying out a graded tendon rehabiliation programme with our speiclist on-site physiotherapists.Shockwave therapy can be used for the following conditions:
- Tennis Elbow
- Golfers Elbow
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Achilles Tendinopathy
- Patella (Knee) Tendinopathy
- Trochanteric (Hip) pain syndrome
What are the risks/side Effects?
Shockwave therapy can be a slightly painful treatment, but the patient will be able to tolerate the disocomfort throughout. Post-treament the patient may experience symptoms such as redness, bruising, swelling and numbness to the treated area however, these side effects should resolve within a few days. There is a very small risk of tendon rupture or ligament rupture and damage to the soft tissue.
What happens after Shockwave Therapy?
Post-treatment you will be able to get up and walk out of the clinic straight away. If you do however experience dany problems following the shockwave treatment you are able to take over the counter painkillers (paracetamol) but avoid anti-inflammatory medication (ibuprofen) and ice therapy, as these methods can interfere with the healing process.
Is Shockwave covered by Private Medical Insurance?
As Radial Shockwave Therapy (RSWT) is recommended by NICE, most private medical insurers will cover this treatment. However, it is essential that patients consult their insurance companies prior to their first appointment to ensure cover is provided.
